HEALTHY SELF ESTEEM

Tropicalia

FUNDACIÓN RANA

Self-esteem is the way a person respects and values themselves. It is how they perceive their whole self: body, abilities, thoughts, and emotions. It also refers to self-confidence and the recognition of oneself as an important and valuable individual within society.

Self-esteem is a fundamental area that begins to develop in the earliest years of life and plays a key role in preventing any difficulties a child may face.

When young children learn to accept their mistakes, improve, feel loved by their family, and express themselves with confidence, a protective shield is built against manipulation, boundary violations, and harmful secrets.

When families promote protective and affectionate environments, validate emotions, praise positive actions, and engage in other positive activities, they help children accept themselves as they are, trust themselves, and value who they are.

A strong foundation of self-esteem allows children to develop in a healthy and well-rounded way, achieving greater autonomy, a desire to learn and explore, the ability to prevent risks, and emotional well-being that will enable them to build equal and respectful relationships.

In  Tropicalia Island, we can observe Nil, a bright child full of energy and curiosity about the world. His time on the island allows him to experiment, set new goals, and share his experiences with his family. This is the result of years of growth supported by his “tribe,” which has helped him develop in a safe and secure way.

During the reading, what questions can we ask ourselves?

  • What are three good things about Nil? And three about you?
  • Nil wears glasses… would it be okay for the Banyadorus Petitus or Grandus to make fun of him because of that?
  • The two tribes cook their favorite dish very well—this is something positive that defines them! And you… what do you do really well?
  • Nil will have to learn how the swimsuit-making machine works… and you, what would you like to learn?

Recommended family activity: The Superpowers Jar

  • Gather together at a calm, relaxed moment and take a large glass jar.
  • Each person writes something positive about the child on a small piece of paper and places it inside the jar. The child also writes good things about themselves. If they cannot write yet, drawings are just as meaningful.
Examples: “I like it when you laugh,” “You are very kind,” “I love your hair…”
  • When the child has a bad day, feels sad, or is not feeling well, they can take out a note and remember all their superpowers.
